And, if all the energy for political observation in music is in hip hop and rap right now, do guitars have nothing else to say? I remember asking these questions after watching the Super Bowl halftime show a few years ago, when I thought Coldplay – with its inoffensive, reach-for-the-stars vibe – was totally upstaged by Beyonce’s blistering and relevant “formation.” I wondered if guitars had lost all meaning.
